What started with a man on an e-bike spotting what he thought was a small puppy quickly became a chase through West Hollywood streets. Videos of the surprisingly fast pig spread online, people started following the story, and before long, Wilbur had become one of the internet's most recognizable animals.

Then came the part nobody expected.

How Wilbur Became Famous

Wilbur was spotted running loose in West Hollywood on August 15. Local resident Jamaal Harrison was riding an e-bike when he noticed the animal and initially thought he had seen a puppy. He soon realized that the small animal racing through the neighborhood was actually a pig.

Harrison followed Wilbur through streets and alleyways as the pig tried to escape. The unusual chase was captured on video, and the footage quickly attracted attention online.

Eventually, multiple people helped bring Wilbur under control. He was taken to the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter, where he was cared for after no owner came forward to claim him. The shelter later made him available for adoption.

And that's when Wilbur's internet fame turned into something much more meaningful.

Why Was Everyone Trying to Adopt Him?

Wilbur wasn't just another animal waiting quietly for a home.

By the time he reached the shelter, his story had already spread across social media. According to reports, four people came forward hoping to adopt him, so the shelter used a silent auction to determine who would take him home.

The winning bid came from Marcia Zwilling, representing the Diane Warren Foundation.

That meant Wilbur wasn't going back to an ordinary home.

He was heading to a seven-acre animal sanctuary in Malibu run by Grammy-winning songwriter Diane Warren.

Diane Warren Saw the Story and Wanted to Help

Warren is best known for writing some of the biggest songs in modern pop culture, but she has also spent years supporting animal welfare and rescue efforts.

After seeing the news about Wilbur, Warren asked her foundation's managing director to get involved. Zwilling ultimately won the silent auction and brought the pig to Warren's sanctuary.

For Wilbur, the change was dramatic.

Instead of running through busy Los Angeles streets and ending up in an animal shelter, he now has a permanent home at Warren's Malibu property, alongside other rescued animals.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Wilbur is about 11 weeks old and weighs around 17 pounds. At the sanctuary, he was placed in an enclosure next to another pig and given room to settle into his new surroundings.

There Is One Funny Problem With His Name

There's a small complication with the happy ending.

Diane Warren already has another pig named Wilbur.

So the runaway West Hollywood pig may eventually receive a new name.

Warren has reportedly suggested "Hollywood" as a possibility  a fitting name for a pig whose strange journey through Los Angeles turned him into a celebrity.

It would be difficult to imagine a more appropriate ending.

From West Hollywood Streets to a Malibu Sanctuary

What makes Wilbur's story so appealing isn't simply that a pig went viral.

It's what happened afterward.

Most viral internet moments disappear almost as quickly as they arrive. A funny video gets millions of views, people share it for a day or two, and then the internet moves on to something else.
